Did He not find you an orphan and give you refuge?
Surah Ad-Duha 93:6
The care of orphans is not a footnote in Islam. It is named directly in the Qur’an and in the Sunnah: as a duty, as a warning to those who would take advantage, and as a promise to those who take one in. These are the verses and narrations MMO has kept before it since 1962.
Did He not find you an orphan and give you refuge?
Therefore, treat not the orphan with oppression.
And they give food, in spite of their love for it, to the poor, the orphan and the captive.
Freeing a slave, or giving food on a day of hunger to an orphan near of kin.
They ask you what they should spend. Say: whatever you spend of good is for parents and kindred, and orphans and the poor and the wayfarer. And whatever you do of good, indeed Allah knows it well.
And they ask you concerning orphans. Say: the best thing is to work honestly in their affairs, and if you mix your affairs with theirs, then they are your brothers. And Allah knows him who means mischief from him who means good.
And test orphans until they reach the age of marriage; if then you find sound judgement in them, release their property to them, and consume it not wastefully and hastily, fearing that they should grow up.
And when the relatives and the orphans and the poor are present at the time of division, give them out of the property, and speak to them words of kindness and justice.
Verily, those who unjustly consume the property of orphans consume only fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the blazing Fire.
“I and the one who cares for an orphan will be in Paradise like this,” and he ﷺ gestured with his forefinger and middle finger, holding them slightly apart.
Recorded in this collection in translation only.
Whoever takes an orphan of the Muslims into their own food and drink, Allah will admit them into Paradise, unless they have committed an unforgivable sin.
Around 600 children at Makola and Malwana are fed, schooled and cared for by people who read these words and acted on them.
